Senior overcoming injury to aid early success for Okemos football

Okemos senior Dalis Williams (7) rushes during a contest against Mason last month. Williams has rushed for just over 200 yards for the Chiefs, who are 1-1 entering CAAC Blue play.

Success was limited for the Okemos football team last fall.

And that didn’t sit well with Dalis Williams.

Bouncing back from last year’s one-win season has been a top priority this year for the senior running back/defensive back and the Chiefs.

And despite being bothered by an ankle injury, Williams has found a way to help Okemos experience some early season success.

Williams has rushed for just over 200 yards this fall and was among the contributors for the Chiefs in their 30-6 victory over Michigan State recruit Hunter Rison and Ann Arbor Skyline last week. He ran for 125 yards on 15 carries and scored a touchdown in that victory while helping Okemos (1-1) match last year’s win total and gain momentum heading into Friday’s CAAC Blue opener against Everett (0-2).

“I just try to do what’s best for my team and try to get the (win),” Williams said. “My adrenaline took over and I couldn’t even really feel (my ankle pain). I was just focused on getting that win and trying to do what’s best for my teammates.”

Okemos coach Jack Wallace said Williams, who is receiving college interest from Mid-American Conference and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference programs, has set a positive example and been a leader for his Chiefs program that is trying to compete for a CAAC Blue title and get into the state playoffs for a second time in three years.

“Dalis is a competitor. He works as hard as anybody,” Wallace said. “Right now he’s not 100 percent. He got banged up in one of our scrimmages. These first two weeks I’m amazed that he’s out there doing the things he’s done already to be very honest with you. The last two Thursdays he’s played extremely hard. He’s been playing hurt and the kids see it and respect it. He’s a team leader and he gets them going.

“Obviously he was one of our leaders from last year. He was one when we got done with the season last year that was so frustrated and disappointed in how our season went, and he was going to do something about that. He has through the example that he sets.”

The 6-foot, 181-pound Williams, who ran for 1,043 yards last fall, has fought  through his tender ankle to make some key plays, including picking up a key first down on a third and short when last week’s contest with Skyline was still close, Williams said.

“We didn’t block that play particularly well and I think he got four yards on that play,” Wallace said. “It was all on his toughness that got us those yards. I think that toughness part of it and obviously his speed (are key assets).

“It’s that speed, vision and toughness all together that makes him a pretty effective running back.”

Williams has contributed on defense as well and he’s helped the Chief defense surrender just 13 points through the season’s first two weeks.

Williams is ready to use his skills to help Okemos try to keep the momentum from its Week 2 win going over the next seven weeks in CAAC Blue play.

“(That win) was a good feeling and we’re just looking to continue to do that,” Williams said.

“We just had more heart and we just wanted it more (last week). I think (that win is) going to carry us a long way throughout the season. It just feels a lot different. We’re just looking great this year.”

Lansing Sexton’s Khari Foy-Walton, right, pulls in a long pass near the goal line against Okemos’ Jason Pridgeon, left, and Brandon Clark (4) to set up a Sexton touchdown Sept. 23, 2016, in Okemos, Mich. Sexton won 20-7.

Sexton beat Okemos 20-7 Friday night.

Sexton beat Okemos 20-7 Friday night.

OKEMOS – Sexton sophomore Marcus Alston openly admits he had jitters going into Friday’s CAAC Blue showdown against Okemos.

Alston, whose primary position is wide receiver, learned last week that he would be the starting quarterback after usual starter Jackson Barnes suffered a concussion.

The nervousness was evident, as Alston threw an errant pick-six on the third play of the game and followed that with an interception two possessions later when the Big Reds were deep into Okemos territory.

But the sophomore settled down and eventually overcame three first-half interceptions to help Sexton rally back and top the Chiefs, 20-7, on Okemos’ homecoming night.

“Coming into Okemos’ (stadium), on its homecoming game, I was nervous. The fans were loud,” Alston said. “Toward the end of the first half I started getting it all together.

“In the second half, my team just kept cheering me on.”

After Alston’s initial interception to the Chiefs’ Alex Luo, who returned it 45 yards for a touchdown, the Big Reds (3-2, 2-1) finally got on the scoreboard three possessions later when Alston found tight end Khari Foy-Walton, who finished with a game-high 62 receiving yards, for a 12-yard touchdown pass midway through the second quarter.

The touchdown came a possession after Alston threw his second interception of the game – this one coming as Sexton was working in Okemos’ red zone – to Domonique Clerkley.

The Big Reds were able to grab their first lead with 4:53 to play in the third quarter. The Chiefs (1-4, 0-3) started the second half with possession, but on the fourth play of the drive, Sexton’s defensive line blew up a jet sweep, forcing and recovering a fumble in Okemos territory.

The Big Reds followed the momentum-swinging turnover with an eight play, 42-yard drive that was capped by a 2-yard touchdown run by tailback Karey Faulkner, putting his team up, 12-7. The score was setup by a 17-yard run by Faulkner, who had a game-high 167 rushing yards, and a 20-yard pass from Alston to Foy-Walton.

“We just thought that we had to get everyone all in,” Faulkner said of his team’s slow start. “Our quarterback, he’s young, so he’s going to make some mistakes.

“Starting the second half, we came out and played strong.”

The Alston-Foy-Walton connection also led to the Big Reds’ final score early in the fourth quarter, as the two connected for a 30-yard pass to put their team at the Chiefs’ 1-yard line. Alston ran the ball in the end zone on the next play to help give Sexton a 20-7 lead.

For Okemos, the offense was unable to put together enough threatening drives to make Sexton pay for its early mistakes. The Chiefs’ biggest offensive play of the game came late in the fourth quarter when quarterback Jason Pridgeon found Clerkley for a 24-yard reception.

Okemos was on the cusp of cutting its deficit to one score with 2:18 to play, but the Big Reds’ Karl Brooks intercepted Pridgeon at the Sexton 3-yard line to seal the win.

Senior running back Dalis Williams said the inconsistencies on offense is what has hindered the Chiefs through the first half of the season.

“When a bad play happens, we get down a little bit,” said Williams, who had a team-leading 68 rushing yards. “We just have to keep going. …We have to finish, and we didn’t do that today.”

Vote for the LSJ high school video of the week.

Touchdowns are the theme of this week’s LSJ high school video of the week voting, and a handful of Lansing-area players are up for the weekly honor after breaking off lengthy scores during Week 8 of the high school football season.

From Pewamo-Westphalia to Okemos, take a look at and vote for the play you would be most interested in learning more about below. A story on the play will be posted on LSJ.com later in the week.

Vote for LSJ high school athlete of week: Oct. 10-15

Videos can be best submitted weekly until 5 p.m. Sunday using the Twitter hashtag #LSJVOW or emailed to James L. Edwards III at jledwards@lsj.com. Each week we’ll select the best videos and post them online for public voting.

Videos can be of any high school event: A great play from any sport, a pep rally, a matching band performance, someone being honored or a team choreographed dance at practice. If you find it interesting, we want to see it.

This summer, we’ll chose 10 of the best videos from the entire school year and ask you to vote on the video of the year. The winner will be recognized at the Lansing State Journal Greater Lansing Sports Awards banquet.

(Note: The poll to vote is at the bottom.)

DALIS WILLIAMS, OKEMOS: The senior tailback scored a 33-yard touchdown in last week’s 34-0 victory over Eastern.

ROSS FELDPAUSCH AND JACK BOUCK, ST. JOHNS: The Redwings’ Feldpausch found Bouck for a 64-yard touchdown pass in last week’s 28-24 win over Battle Creek Central.

JADEN SUTTON, WAVERLY: The Warriors’ senior running back broke off a 63-yard touchdown run in his team’s 63-35 loss to Lake Fenton last week.

MASON SCHNEIDER AND RYAN SMITH, PEWAMO-WESTPHALIA: On fourth and 15, Smith found Schneider for a 40-yard touchdown reception in last week’s 42-0 victory over Fowler.

Once cut from 8th grade volleyball team, senior has Holt eyeing title

Holt senior Madison David has been an impact player for the Rams this season.

Holt senior Madison David has been an impact player for the Rams this season.

HOLT – Madison David isn’t sure she would have made it to this point in her volleyball career if it weren’t for reality spiking her in the face during her eighth-grade year.

She was prepared to call it quits after getting cut from Holt Middle School’s eighth-grade volleyball team, a year after she said she “miraculously” made the seventh-grade squad after having not played competitive volleyball her entire life.

Before eighth-grade tryouts rolled around, David was all in. She played club volleyball for the first time following the seventh-grade season, and she was more than confident that she had tapped into something.

“I was thinking, ‘Yeah, I’m going to make it. I’m going to advance, a lot.’

“I didn’t make it. I was devastated. It hurt, I guess, but it just made me try harder. … I was upset, I didn’t get why I was cut … I was pretty arrogant, honestly.”

Thanks to a pep talk from her mother, she kept with it, and made the Holt High School junior varsity team as a freshman.

Now a senior, she is in the midst of her second season on varsity and is among the team’s leaders in kills and blocks. The Rams (24-10-5) are the No. 1 seed in the CAAC Blue tournament after going 7-0 in conference play during the regular season and will face No. 5 Grand Ledge in the semifinals Thursday.

Holt varsity volleyball coach Kellie Sweitzer said she’s noticed David’s continuous development each year she’s been in the program. However, Sweitzer said her middle blocker has taken her play up another notch this season.

“She’s putting balls away and killing the ball like we did not expect from her,” said Sweitzer, whose team didn’t lose a set during CAAC Blue play. “She’s stepped up a lot, and she’s definitely someone we look to and try to feed the ball to.”

One of the people whose job is to get David the ball is her classmate Alana Sundermann.

The senior setter can still recall the moment when David made junior varsity as a freshman and the excitement she felt for her.

“She’s gotten a lot more confident in herself,” Sundermann said. “I have a lot of fun setting her because I know she’s going to put the ball where it needs to be. She’s been a key component to our team this year.”

David’s season has helped put Holt on the cusp of just its second CAAC Blue outright title during Sweitzer’s tenure. If victorious Thursday, the Rams, who already guaranteed themselves at least a share of the league title by going unbeaten during the regular season, will take on either No. 2-seeded Okemos or No. 3-seeded East Lansing in the championship game Tuesday. The tournament champion gets a share of the conference title, as well.

In addition, Holt hasn’t won a Class A district tournament game since 2010, and Sweitzer said the team has been keying in on the opportunity to end that drought. And with 11 seniors on the roster, the Rams are hoping experience coupled with a potentially lengthy winning streak could ignite a postseason run.

“Last year was (the seniors) first year being on varsity all at once,” David said. “We didn’t get the outcome we thought we would. We thought we would win a lot more, and we didn’t.

“We made sure to put in the work until we found what worked for us and how to win.”

LSJ high school athlete of week: Okemos' Deniz Kalfa

Deniz Kalfa

Deniz Kalfa

Deniz Kalfa initially was disappointed when he was moved to the No. 4 singles slot for the Okemos boys tennis team earlier this fall.

The junior then looked at the bigger picture and realized it could be an opportunity to compete for a state title.

Kalfa did just that, concluding his junior season as the No. 4 singles champion at Saturday’s Division 2 state meet. His win helped the Chiefs finish tied for third as a team.

“It’s huge I think honestly,” said Kalfa, who defeated Midland Dow’s Saketh Kamaraju for the championship. “That’s one of the first singles titles we’ve had for Okemos in a few years. For me, that was probably one of my biggest accomplishments for the sport on my own.”

Kalfa, who was voted the LSJ high school athlete of the week, had dropped his three prior meetings to Kamaraju this fall before breaking through in the championship match. Those prior matches were close and Okemos coach Chris Silker knew Kalfa had the tools to emerge with a win.

It finally happened Saturday.

“During the match I really thought that I could beat (him),” Kalfa said. “I was getting close points and the score got really close toward the end of the first set. That really drove (me) to go hard and give it everything I had.

“I knew I was very close to his level and I was able to close out the last match, which mattered the most.”

Kalfa believes winning the title will have a significant impact as he aims to continue to improve his skills and grow as a player.

“I came into this season more improved than last season, and getting a title like this really helps boost my confidence, especially going into the next season knowing that I’ve done this before and I can do it again,” Kalfa said. “I think that’s really helpful. This could have been my breakout tournament for not even the high school tennis season, but even the offseason tournaments that I play. I think this really made a big difference.”

Silker also hopes it will make a big difference for Kalfa, who he believes has plenty of upside as a player.

“He has very powerful strokes and he’s a very quick mover,” Silker said. “He has a lot of fight and will work a match to death, but at the same time has that next level put away power. That’s really what he was able to find consistently in that finals match.

“I really hope that (title) brings him some stability. He’s been kind of an up and down player for most of his career. Everyone knows that he’s got this really high upside, but he also had similar downsides where he’s struggled to put things together. I think this title will give him the confidence he needs to relax a little bit during tough matches and trust his skill and his play.”

Okemos soccer falls in regional semifinal

East Kentwood’s Adrian Diaz (14) and Okemos’ Andre Owczarzak (11) go up for the ball during the D1 regional soccer semifinal at Holt High School on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2016.

HOLT – The Okemos High School boys soccer team made a strong run last week while navigating its way to a third district championship in four years.

The Chiefs weren’t able to add on to that success Tuesday.

The state tournament run came to a halt for the Chiefs with a 4-0 setback to No. 19-ranked East Kentwood in a Division 1 regional semifinal at Holt High School.

Okemos was hurt by tough stretches to start both halves in the season-ending loss. All of East Kentwood’s goals came in the opening 10 minutes of both halves.

“We had 10 bad minutes,” Okemos coach Brian Guggemos said. “That’s happened to us a couple of times this year whether that was against Haslett or against another team. We had 10 bad minutes. It was the first five minutes of the game and then we settled down and I thought it was a pretty even game the entire rest of the first half.

“Then in the second half from the 40 until the 30-minute mark we had a couple more (bad) minutes and we just couldn’t recover. They are a great team and great program and really well coached. We just couldn’t get over that hump. I’m really proud of the way they guys kept fighting until the end.”

Okemos entered Tuesday having not allowed a goal during its first three state tournament games. That changed quickly as East Kentwood struck five minutes into the game on a goal by Narcis Sprecic.

That was the only goal scored in the first half, but East Kentwood struck early after the intermission to take control. The Falcons scored three goals in less than three minutes during the opening seven minutes of the second half.

Adrian Diaz had a pair of goals during the stretch as East Kentwood advanced to Thursday’s regional final.

“They played a lot harder today (than when we saw them before),” said Guggemos, whose team played to a draw with East Kentwood earlier this season. “Their on the ball defense was a lot better than what it was when we saw them at the beginning of September. They kind of did what we thought they could do. They just did it a higher rate than what we could keep up with.”

Holt tops Okemos to reach district volleyball final

MASON – Madison David and the Holt volleyball team accomplished one of their big goals by capturing a CAAC Blue championship.

The senior middle blocker and the Rams hope to add to what’s been a successful season by capturing a Class A district crown.

They took a step toward doing that goal Thursday evening.

Holt earned a spot in a district championship match with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-21 victory over Okemos in a semifinal contest at Mason High School.

“From the beginning and fifth grade, we’ve been working really hard trying to build up to this moment,” said David, who had a team-high 10 kills for the Rams. “We knew our senior year that we were going to win and we finally did and we pushed through.

“We’ve been very hungry. We’ve been dreaming on this moment our entire life and now it’s here.”

Senior setter Alana Sundermann had 27 assists and senior libero Hannah Whiteman had 26 digs and three aces to help Holt advance to face Mason in Saturday’s district final.

The Rams (27-10-5) knocked off Okemos for a third time this season and second time in eight days to earn what coach Kellie Sweitzer said was the program’s first state tournament victory in a few seasons.

“They’ve worked really hard over years as well as this season,” Sweitzer said. “We knew from the get go that this is what their main mission was to at least get past that first round and then win districts. We haven’t been past the first round – it’s been at least five years since that happened.

“This is a big accomplishment for them. Their goals are high (and they want) to win districts as well. They’ve been working really hard in practice. They had tons of energy tonight, which really got us through. The leadership on our team of the 11 seniors definitely helps a lot, but the younger girls were there today for support and encouragement as well.”
